Title: Exploring Technology Tools and Methods for Enhancement of Japanese Language Education
Description:
With recent advancements in technology, there has been a lot of theoretical and pedagogical discussion regarding the effective use of technology to support student communicative learning. Stemming from this discussion, educators are currently seeking effective ways to integrate computer devices and software programs into their classrooms. In the first half of this workshop, we will introduce computer applications for creating three modes of communication activities — interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Then, we will explain examples of learning units designed for K-16 level education settings, where the three modes are linked and various types of technological programs are integrated. In the second half of the workshop, we will provide hands-on sessions where the participants will have an opportunity to create their own technology-enhanced teaching materials and explore how to use them effectively in their classrooms. Participants need to bring their own laptops.
Presenters:
Dr. Noriko Fujioka-Ito is a full professor and the Director of the Japanese Language and Culture Program at the University of Cincinnati. She has achieved an extensive record of presentations and publications on a variety of areas, including developing 21st century skills, learning autonomy, distance learning education, feedback, heritage language learning, and Japanese for specific purposes. Furthermore, she has been involved in professional services at large; for example, she currently serves as an ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) Quality Assurance Advisor and is on the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Instruction.
Dr. Kasumi Yamazaki is assistant professor of Japanese in the Department of World Languages & Cultures, The University of Toledo. Dr. Yamazaki’s research focuses on a wide range of contemporary Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) pedagogy and integration, namely, the use of 3D simulation games and virtual realities (VRs), the development of an intelligent language learning smartphone application and the effectiveness of hybrid/online teaching curricula. Dr. Yamazaki currently serves as an Editor-in-Chief of a journal entitled Technology in Language Teaching & Learning. Among her recent publications include papers in the journals such as ReCALL & Foreign Language Annals; she frequently gives presentations at refereed international conferences such asACTFL, AATJ, JALT-CALL, CALICO, EuroCALL.
