OATJ is a local affiliate of AATJ. Affiliates collaborate with AATJ on projects and receive a portion of the dues from AATJ members who choose to join or who live in the regions or states covered by the affiliates. When you join AATJ, please remember to select OATJ as your local affiliate, as this is one of our primary means of funding activities.
Membership in AATJ (American Association of Teachers of Japanese) is on a calendar-year basis and entitles you to:
- AATJ Newsletter (four issues annually) and monthly email bulletins [to ensure that you receive email bulletins, please add aatj@aatj.org to your address book/safe list so that your school does not block messages from us; or use a personal address on gmail or hotmail if you have one]
- For an additional $15, receive 2 issues annually of the internationally recognized journal Japanese Language and Literature
- Attend at member rates, and propose presentations for, two annual conferences
- Participate in professional development opportunities, including the JOINT program of online courses for Japanese language teachers
- Nominate outstanding students for membership in the Japanese National Honor Society, at either the high school or the college level
- Support and become a member of a regional or state Japanese language educators’ association concurrent with your national AATJ membership
- Offer participation to your students in AATJ-sponsored contests, exams, and other activities
- Participate in Special Interest Groups on professional development, heritage language education, assessment, study abroad, translating & interpreting, and other topics
- Benefit from AATJ’s ongoing efforts to promote Japanese studies and enhance the quality of education in Japanese language, literature, linguistics, and culture
